Argales spoil heap

After a day at the beach, why not sit on the spoil heap and savour some local organic cheese?

Unusual flora, exceptional fauna and breath-taking views make Argales a magical place. From the steeple overlooking the spoil heap, the view sweeps the horizon.

This is the largest flat spoil heap of the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin, with an area of 140 hectares. Its colossal weight has caused it to sink into the ground and form a lake. In the 1990s, the spoil heap and lake were converted into a recreational area with an artificial beach.

Today it is a popular hiking area, attracting thousands of visitors every year, including locals, tourists, hikers and even connoisseurs of organic goat milk products!

At the bottom of the spoil heap, stop off at the goat farm. The rustic Poitou breed of goats are perfectly at home here. The farm has a herd of around fifty goats… just look out for their funny names! Take the time to taste the soft and hard goat cheeses, which will give you a bit of a boost before climbing up the spoil heap.
