A breathtaking desert sunset

Among the various spots to watch the sunset in Khiva or Itchan Kala, one of the best is Kunha Ark and its watchtower. The complex is interesting enough in itself - built in the 12th century, Kunha Ark is a magnificent citadel which used to be the residence of Khiva's rulers. With a large wall and imposing door, it's quite easy to find.

Once inside, have a look through the inner domain. With an open-air throne room and a mosque beautifully painted in white and blue patterns, Kunha Ark’s insides are a sight to behold. The citadel is even said to be one of the best architectural wonders of the city. From the throne room of Kunha Ark, you can find the stairs which will guide you to the top of the watchtower where you will find one of the best spots in Khiva to watch the sunset: a panoramic view on top of the 10-metre-high tower.
