Catch some rays in Troyes!
Timber-framed treasures
If you like old, picturesque architecture, do not miss visiting the city of Troyes, which has one of the most beautiful set of sixteenth-century timber-framed houses. Like its city centre, shaped like a champagne cork, these houses with colourful facades recall the city’s rich medieval and Renaissance past, when it hosted the great champagne fairs. Discover the pedestrian area and its narrow streets, including the unusual Rue des Chats where the houses’ roofs touch across the street, and its gardens and squares.
Original museums
Troyes is notable for its ten listed churches, embellished with old stained glass windows and original statuary. For a glimpse of the glassmaking tradition in the Troyes region, visit the Cité du Vitrail (Stained Glass Museum) in the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte, where works from the twelfth to the twenty-first centuries are on display. There are also half a dozen museums with original collections to choose from, from the Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière (Museum of Craftsmen’s Tools) to the Museum of Modern Art, the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte Apothecary to the hosiery museum, unique in France.
Capital of shopping and gastronomy
Formerly renowned for its hosiery industry, Troyes has become famous for its knitwear and fashion, establishing itself as the European capital of factory outlets. There are hundreds of textile and clothing brands on the city’s outskirts, at two large sites. Do your shopping freely and safely! Are you a curious gourmet? In addition to the Champagne wines from the nearby Côte des Bar and Rosé des Riceys, treat yourselves to local produce, such as creamy Chaource cheese or the famous andouillette of Troyes.
