Château-Thierry American Monument: for remembrance

At the top of the Marne valley, to the west of Château-Thierry, on Hill 204, the United States of America erected an impressive memorial to commemorate the services of her troops during the First World War.

Inaugurated in 1937, it is built on land offered by France to the United States of America in the very place where the Americans finally gained control of the hill after the offensive in July 1918, which claimed so many casualties among the allied troops.

Large statues of women holding hands on the west side of the monument symbolise the friendship between France and America. On the east side is the American eagle bearing the inscription “Time will not dim the glory of their deeds”. Under this inscription, a map of the region shows the progress of the American allied forces during the Aisne-Marne battle. On the ground, an orientation table indicates the directions and distances of historical points of interest.

The American Battle Monuments Commission, which manages the maintenance of all American cemeteries and memorials in France and around the world, has a new reception and information centre on the involvement of the United States of America in the First World War that opened in the summer of 2018.
