Champagne tourist routes: the best way to discover the vineyards

To understand what makes champagne unique, you can visit the winemakers, cooperatives and champagne houses that produce it: enjoy a trip to the heart of the vineyards, towns and villages, winepresses and cellars. You will discover the soul of this wine, its mark on the landscape, the ancestral know-how that has always pursued excellence, as well as the natural wealth, heritage and sites of memory in the area.

Several routes have been marked to enable you to experience the great diversity of the terroirs and champagnes, while enjoying the main tourist attractions.

Reims and its region: after visiting the sights in Reims, including the cathedral and basilicas inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, take a break in the Massif de Saint-Thierry and the Montagne de Reims where you will find rustic villages, Romance and Gothic churches and welcoming winemakers.

The Marne valley: the Marne River serves as a guide for you to cross the vineyards from Epernay, enjoying views of the valley, as at Châtillon-sur-Marne from the statue of Pope Urban II, visiting Château-Thierry, birthplace of Jean de La Fontaine, the memorial of the battles of the Marne (1914-1918) at Dormans, Boursault and Condé-en-Brie castles, and villages where time seems to stand still.

The Côte des Bar: around Bar-sur-Seine you will see the green hills and vales that inspired the painter Renoir. Stop at Essoyes to discover the Espace Renoir, the painter’s house and studio. As you reach the boundary between the departments of Aube and Haute-Marne, you can visit the Charles de Gaulle Memorial at Colombey-les-Deux Eglises to reflect upon twentieth century history. Make a stop at the Forêt d’Orient Lake, then continue on to Troyes to discover its heritage, its remarkable timber-framed houses and its museums.
