Charleroi Photography Museum

If you’re interested in photography, past or present—if names like René Magritte, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward Weston, Willy Ronis, and Nadar mean something to you—you mustn’t miss a visit to the Musée de la Photographie at Charleroi. Here you can see more than a thousand photos, plus cameras that will take you on a journey through time and all over the world.

You wander through an old Carmelite convent with a contemporary wing, the setting for Europe’s largest photography museum with an area of more than 2,200 sq metres, which presents the technical and artistic diversity of photography in a permanent display which is regularly up-dated, and temporary exhibitions that sketch out a wide panorama of Belgian and international photography.

And if your children happen to be with you, they’ll love this fun experience, designed for people with a thirst for knowledge who like to learn something new. The nature, language, and uniqueness of photography are presented here to educate and entertain, from the studio of the 1900s to optical illusions and image manipulation. It's a real treat for the kids – and afterwards they can let off steam in the Museum gardens or refuel in the Café.
