Cycling along the Danube
The Danube Bike Route, the Eurovelo #6, is one of the most scenic cycling routes in Europe. It extends for about 1,200 kilometers from Donaueschingen in Germany to the Hungarian capital of Budapest, and the section through Wachau is a highlight of the route. You'll will ride along tow paths, well-cared-for bike paths and quiet village streets. The route has many rest stops with comfortable pergolas for cyclists to rest and enjoy the river views.
If you decide to bike your way through Wachau you can choose either the south or the north bank. On the more frequented north side of the Danube, you'll pass the famous medieval villages of Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. The south bank ride is more laid back and offers equally beautiful villages plus the famous views of the terraced wine hills and villages across the Danube.
There is no need to bring your own bike because local companies rent bikes and there is also the public bike sharing system, nextbike, with stations across the Wachau.
