Drive across the border to Uzbekistan
The authenticity of the historic sites in Kunya-Urgench is one of the most important drawcards for the region. As well as being a prominent Islamic pilgrimage centre, travellers come here to explore the heritage of the monuments, which have been well preserved.
However, because there's a considerable distance between the sites, the best way to move around the area is by car or tour bus. This also offers the added bonus of being able to take in the beauty of the Karkum Desert, which inspires visions of the old caravans that once travelled along the Silk Roads through this region.
Exploring by car also gives you the opportunity to head further out and make a longer road trip through the region - including even into Uzbekistan. Kunya-Urgench is located in northern Turkmenistan, just a one-hour drive to the town of Doshoguz, which is the main city near the border with Uzbekistan. This route lies along the ancient Silk Road, with thousands of travellers making this journey over the centuries.
The border town of Doshoguz is a good base for accommodation, dining, and shopping. From here, you can then cross over into Uzbekistan to continue your travels. Once over the border, the roads will lead you to the cities of Khiva and Uzbek Urgench. Following this route could then guide you even further to other UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Samarkand and Bukhara.
There are many tour companies that will pick you up from your hotel in Doshoguz. Check with your reserved hotel for more information.
