Esrum Abbey

Until the Reformation, Esrum Abbey was the spiritual centre of the Cistercians in Denmark and featured one of the largest church domes in the kingdom. When Protestantism made its way into Denmark, the king ordered the destruction of 90 percent of the Abbey; its bricks were used to construct several new additions to surrounding castles.
As the Abbey and its many properties fell under the Crown in 1536, it was allowed to stand largely unchanged and came to function mainly as the king’s hunting castle, and later as the royal stud farms, responsible for breeding the famous Frederiksborg horses that grazed in the meadows.
While on the grounds, be sure to visit the delicacy-filled Abbey shop, savour the scents in the herbal garden, and enjoy the outdoor playground. You can also eat and drink as kings in the charming Abbey Cellars while enjoying a lunch with a view of the Abbey in the Café on the Mill. At the heart of the new national park, Esrum Abbey is also a premier choice as a departure point for nature hikes. You can see more about what we have to offer clicking here.
