Events in the Mines

The beautiful underworld of the Wieliczka and Bochnia Mines provide a unique and interesting setting for events including concerts, ceremonies, games, tournaments, competitions, and conferences.

Music can be often heard echoing through the underworld, when the mines host concerts of world-class artists with diverse repertoires: from classical, jazz, through contemporary, country, to film music. The year begins with the New Year's Concert (in January), the Easter reverie is introduced by concerts organised as part of the Misteria Paschalia Festival taking place in the Chapel of St. Kinga. Summer opens with the Summer Music Festival, and ends with a concert entitled "An Afternoon with Strauss". Undoubtedly, one of the greatest attractions are the concerts of the Wieliczka Salt Mine National Orchestra, which is almost 200 years old.

The underground hallways also host many sporting events, transforming the large chambers into pitches, rings, and fields, filled with excitement and emotions. The Wieliczka Salt Mine used the Warszawa Chamber to host boxing galas and dance tournaments. The Staszic Chamber was the arena for a bungee-jumping event, and the world's first underground balloon flight. The Bochnia Mine, in turn, uses its Ważyn Chamber to host football matches, basketball matches, judo and table tennis tournaments, and shooting competitions. Other mine excavations are the stages for marathons, relays, and extreme bicycle races.

The mines also provide unique and inspiring venues for meetings, workshops, and conferences. The Wieliczka Mine has several professional conference rooms in different sizes, and Bochnia rents out the Ważyn Chamber for meetings and conferences.

Both mines have also been centres of spirituality and prayer for centuries. Miners believed that prayer protected them from the many dangers of mining. In both mines, in the Chapels of St. Kinga, masses are held in honour of the patrons: St. Kinga - the patron of salt miners (24th July), and St. Barbara - the patron of all miners (4th December), as well as other religious celebrations such as Christmas Eve. The Wieliczka Mine hosts Holy Masses every Sunday at 7:30 AM, which are open to everyone. Underground weddings also take place here occasionally.
