Explore the excavation of Roman Baths

Go back in time with this special look at the Barbara Baths.

Today, the original dimensions of the Barbara Baths can only be imagined in places. But new information areas offer you glimpses into the edifice's truly monumental stature and its prominent location within the Roman city.

For the first time, you are now able to get direct access to the excavation site of the Barbara Baths. A visitor walkway running across the complex provides an entirely new experience of the Roman baths. Passing nine stops, you'll receive an illuminating insight into the site.

Besides their architecture and magnificent fixtures, reconstructions provide impressions of what it was like to visit the baths during the Roman era. The stops also help illustrate developments during Late Antiquity, and also the continuing restoration work on the bath complex.

The city's oldest baths offered their guests a luxurious bathing experience of unparalleled quality. Guests lingered in several bathing pools, some of them heated, and two swimming pools, enjoying an "oasis of wellness and a cultural centre". The complex remained in operation until the fifth century AD, when it was partially destroyed by the Teutons and ultimately taken down.
