Hiking trails

Scattered throughout the Stari Grad Plain are the ruins of ancient structures and small archaeological sites dating way back to the arrival of the first Greek settlers. You can get to these by bicycle and (in many cases) by car, but one of the more interesting ways to explore the historical sites is by hiking.

There are several hiking routes through the Stari Grad Plain that will take you through scenic landscapes to various points of interest. It’s a great way to see for yourself how the agricultural structure was created here. At different times of the year, there are changes in the crops and colours of the farms. One of the most beautiful seasons is autumn, when the grapes and olives and being harvested.

The hike to Maslinovik leads through olive and fig trees to the remains of a Greek watchtower from the 4th century BC. From here, you can see other archaeological sites – Tor above Jelsa and Purkin Kuk in the hills above Stari Grad.

The Kupovnik hike is a gentle walk that goes to the site of a Roman villa from the first or second century AD. It is well signposted and is particularly pleasant in the early evening.

For longer hikes, there are also trails that lead from Stari Grad to other villages like Mudri Dolac, Basina and Vrboska. You should be able to do a return trip to any of them within about two and a half hours.
