Mystic Forests of the Harz Mountains
In the mystic forests of the Harz Mountains, visitors find 4,000 square kilometres of rugged granite cliffs, mountain pines, misty moors, deep valleys, waterfalls, rushing streams, and crystal-clear lakes. Small medieval villages with steep-roofed houses and narrow cobble streets are typical for this region.
The Harz National Park is one of the largest forest national parks in Germany and stretches over 10 percent of the total area of the Harz Mountains. The legendary Brocken Mountain, at 1,141 metres, is the highest mountain of the Harz and can be reached with nice trails, and by railway with a nostalgic steam engine.
According to the legend: once a year—during the night from 30th April to 1st May—witches gather to meet with the devil on top of the mountain.
