Roman-style grape harvests at the Mas des Tourelles
A Roman-style garden and a reconstructed vineyard
This wine-producing estate, built on the remains of an old Gallo-Roman wine cellar, offers a wide variety of wines from this era. A Roman-style garden leads to the reconstructed vineyard. The vines are trained on different kinds of support: trellises, pergolas or olive trees. A path runs alongside an orchard and scented garden, leading to the archaeological remains of a Gallo-Roman amphora workshop with pottery kilns.
**The world's only reconstructed Gallo-Roman wine cellar **
This Gallo-Roman cellar with its wooden lever press, earthenware jars, amphorae and baskets is the world's only functioning reconstructed ancient winery.
"Mulsum," "Turriculae," and "Carenum" wines are produced and matured in the winery, based on Latin recipes, as part of an experimental archaeology approach.
After the visit, it's time for some tasting ...
If, during your visit to the Mas des Tourelles, you're unable to attend our annual Roman-style afternoon grape harvest held on the 2nd weekend of September, you can still glean an insight into the entire wine-production process, from grape picking to wine-making, thanks to a film about the Roman wine harvest and grape press, shown on a giant screen in the reconstructed cellar.
Once you've visited the cellar and the exhibition, you can take part in a tasting session - held in the shop selling regional products - where you'll get to taste wine similar to the wine once enjoyed by the Romans.
