Taste some ancient Roman wines

Using methods from two millennia ago, local wine producers have replicated the taste from the Roman era.

The story begins not far from the Pont du Gard at Mas des Tourelles, a wine-producing estate in grounds of an old Gallo-Roman villa. Excavations under existing vineyards found the presence of a significant wine and olive oil business dating back to Roman times.

Based on this discovery, wine-makers, together with some archaeologists, embarked upon an important task: to try to replicate the taste of Roman wine and reconstruct a Roman vineyard and winery. Using recipes translated from Latin and harvesting methods practised some 2,000 years ago, they have successfully managed to produce ancient wines.

Opposite the Pont du Gard, on the restaurant terrace, you can enjoy an unusual introduction to wine-tasting. It's a unique experience and a tasty discovery to excite your palate.

The Roman wine, produced using ancient traditional techniques, has a surprising richness and flavour, unlike traditional French wines. On the menu: a chance to taste some Mulsum, a very honeyed wine, then some Turriculae with iris-like and salt water aromas, made in true Roman tradition, and finally, some Carenum, a sweet, liquorice-flavoured wine.
