The Basilica of Constantine

During reconstruction of the Basilica of Constantine (used today as the Protestant Church of the Redeemer) in the 1950s, extensive remnants of previous buildings were found below the former underfloor heating system.
These remnants turned out to be a lavishly-arranged residential area from the 1st century AD, which borders on a street that is about 12 metres wide. On the other side of the street, was a large hall built in the 2nd century.
Because of the importance of the site for the history of the city, the excavation has been preserved since 1956 and was made accessible to visitors. It is one of the earliest initiatives with regard to cultural heritage preservation for public access.
The preserved excavation areas can only be explored with special guided tour, which you can book via Trier Tourism and Marketing. Visualised reconstructions exemplify the building construction at the time, new display cases exhibit selected finds, while revised construction phase plans and a renewed colour scheme make it possible to orient yourself in the rooms.
