The Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland

The Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland, listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 2012, is a site that consists of seven farmhouses, which are representative of more than one thousand of the total structures. While here, take the time to enjoy the beauty of the past and feel the wings of history.

When you travel through the county of Hälsingland, you see them everywhere. The big, wooden Hälsingland farmhouses, which are mostly red-coloured. And although you see the exterior, if you go inside, you will find beautiful decorated rooms—built and used for special days and occasions and a rarity indeed for farmhouses worldwide.

There is no doubt that the farmers of Hälsingland invested a lot in their homes. The paintings were inspired by both churches and village areas. Marbling can be found in the lobbies. Stencils were decorating most rooms, and their prestige increased during the mid-1800s.

Of the seven World Heritage listed farms you can visit two of them: Erik Anders and Fågelsjö Gammelgård spontaneously. For the rest of the seven farms—Jon-Lars, Pallars, Gästgivars, Kristofers, and Bommars—you have to make a reservation in the visitors center at Stene Gård in Järvsö.
