The Ermitage Hunting Lodge
The lodge is named after the table-elevator that once allowed the king and his entourage to dine alone (en ermitage), without servants or other people interfering. By a signal from the king, a fully laid and decorated table would be lifted from the kitchen in the basement—through the floors—and up through the dining room floor.
When you first visit the hunting lodge you will notice that the outside is decorated with hunting motifs: cut-stone red stag heads protruding from the walls. Inside the hunting lodge, you find richly decorated rooms in fine imported Chinese silks, elegantly painted porcelain tiles, dazzling marble, and intricate stucco sculptures inlaid with gold and mirrors. All this adds up to a genuine pearl of late-Baroque architecture. Because of the recent renovations, it is just as impressive now as when it was first built in the 1730s.
Every Wednesday, the drive up to the Ermitage Hunting lodge, from the western gate, is open. Parking is available outside Jægersborg Deer Park on either side. The walk to the lodge is 1.7 kilometres from the western gate and 1.2 kilometres from the eastern side.
