The miraculous church in Nessebar

This 160-year-old church has been watching over the oldest city along the Black Sea Coast. Every day, Nesebar’s local citizens and tourists from all over the world worship god in the monastery in the centre of the old town.

Almost two centuries ago, people of Nesebar would meet the dawn with a crying icon of the Holy Mother hung on the oldest tree in the city. Legend has it that once, the local citizens decided to take it down from the tree branches and brought it inside one of the churches in the city for three days. During those times, Nesebar had more than 60 temples. Every morning, however, the sacred image of the Holy Mother would appear on the tree again. On the fourth day, the Holy Mother herself appeared before a local maiden and told her that she wanted from the people of Nesebar to build her home where the tree was. Without losing time, the local people started working on it. Women carried sand in their aprons, while men sold all their gold and valuables for the cause.

Now, the trunk of this miraculous tree is in the centre of the church. In 1880, builders cut it and found in its roots as much gold and money as they had invested in the church.

Today, tourists from all over the world come to visit the church and pray to the Holy Mother for health and good life.
