Tribal dance

The Oraon community originates from Ranchi in northeast India and is a tribal community with a rich cultural heritage. A big part of the heritage of the Oraon culture involves dance and music. To get an insight into these tribal traditions, the Oraon community invites visitors to watch and join in their special dance and music performances.
The Oraon people worship natural objects and believe that there is a creator of the universe named Dharami, who exists in the sun. These beliefs make up a large part of the stories in the performances. To play the music, the Oraon use traditional musical instruments that are made by the community. These instruments are also played during religious ceremonies and festivals.
Traditional dresses of Oraon include a short single cloth for males called nengti and two pieces of small cloth for women, called fata. Oraon women like to wear ornaments of different designs including nose-pins and hair clips made of silver. Tattooing is considered to be a religious ritual for children before attaining adulthood.
A visit to the community, including the dance performance, costs Tk 4000 and takes about two hours. The community is just a short five-minute drive from Paharpur.
