Between Almaty and Talgar, the Tien-Shan Mountains are full of natural wonders. The Almaty Nature Reserve is a place where you can disconnect from the outside world, with diverse landscapes that include powerful rivers, glaciers, crystal-blue lakes, steppes, and forests.
One of the best-kept secrets of Kazakhstan, the reserve is home to some special wildlife and plant species. It is estimated that 200 birds, about 40 species of mammals, a few reptiles, and thousands of insects cohabit in these natural lands. And among those, about 50 wildlife and plant species are enlisted in the Red Book of Kazakhstan. This red book gathers some of the rarest and most endangered species that live in the country. Consequently, Almaty Nature Reserve is a sanctuary for species like the snow leopards, deer, or eagles that can live in a well-protected reserve.
