Sessa Aurunca

The ancient Suessa Aurunca was the capital of the people of the Aurunci. It was founded, it is said, in 337 a. C., after the destruction of the old town of Aurunca by the Sidicini of Teano. During the Second Punic War, he was punished by the Romans for refusing to provide the required contribution. By virtue of the lex Iulia municipalis it was elevated to the town hall. In the period of civil wars between Mario and Silla, having taken the parts of the latter was taken over by Sertorio, but then resumed and embellished by the dictator.

Under Augusto there was a colony, where he changed the name to Colonia Iulia Felix Classical Suessa. You can visit the Roman Theater and cryptoporticus of Sessa Aurunca, built in the Augustan era, was restored and enlarged in the 2nd century AD, under Antonino Pio. For the grandeur of the remains and the preciousness of the finds, it is the tangible evidence of the power of Rome and of his interest in the city of Suessa. You must visit the Museum of Sessa Aurunca.
