Pottery-making

A great way to discover the local way of life in this part of Bangladesh is to visit the local Palpara community. The community is specialised in the making of terracotta pots and traditional terracotta sculptures and toys. Visitor are more than welcome and there are lots of ways you can get involved.
The Palpara community will do demonstrations and explain the process and different steps of traditional terracotta making, from raw clay to final terracotta products. If you’re interested, you can also try your hand at making some pottery and clay sculptures yourself. Most of the techniques that are practiced here are very similar to the way the art would have been made for decorating Paharpur centuries ago.
The pottery-making community recently took part in a training programme to enhance their artisanal pottery-making and design skills. By visiting the community and purchasing some of their pottery products, you’ll also be supporting the survival of local craftsmanship as an element of living heritage of Bangladesh.
The Palpara community is just a 15-minute drive from Paharpur. A visit costs Tk 1500 and takes about two hours. The prices for terracotta sculptures begin at just Tk 100.
